An open letter to The Times from Lord Toby Harris, Chair of the NPC, has been published to highlight the need for greater national preparedness and the need to urgently scale up investment in building national resilience and risk communication for household-level preparedness.

In response, this article in The Times, explores what to do if the power goes out this winter, following UK Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden’s comments urging people to enhance their personal resilience and stock up on battery-powered equipment in advance of potential winter power outages.

The Times interviewed three UK Professors specialising in disaster response, asking what measures they have taken to prepare at home. This follows an earlier article that explores the impacts of a national power outage on critical infrastructure and food supply chains.
