Guterres cited instances of malfunctioning AI systems and AI’s association with nuclear weapons. He emphasized the need for a universal approach to AI governance and called for national and global action to address the skills gap in AI. Guterres announced a high-level meeting on AI and a policy brief on A New Agenda for Peace, which will make recommendations on AI governance, including a legally-binding instrument to prohibit lethal autonomous weapons systems. The Secretary-General urged the Security Council to assume a leadership role in AI and develop common measures for transparency, accountability, and oversight.
