The Disasters Avoided Newsletter is a bi-monthly publication to stimulate ideas, debate and action for avoiding disasters. The first part of this edition highlights wildfires, using case studies from around the world to share lessons and actions for preparedness and resilience to avoid disaster. Examples include the Landscape Fire Governance Framework for developing an all-stakeholder governance model for managing wildfire risk in Portugal. The second part explores interviews with senior officials, including: Mami Mizutori, Head of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), and Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction to discuss the 2024-2025 UNDRR Work programme; and Peter Williams and Ben Ryan who discuss the UNDRR ARISE network, with particular focus on the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities.

The third part of this newsletter provides links to three recent articles published on disasters avoided, including what we can learn, the role of innovation, and private sector involvement to avoid and prevent disasters.  The fourth section sets out a series of ideas to inspire action by unveiling the first step of the new disaster-avoided model – having the right mindset. The final part of the newsletter provides a comprehensive overview of research and news related to the theme of disasters avoided, including an overview of the recent earthquake in Japan and how preparedness helped prevent catastrophe.
