The UK Government has accused China of malicious cyber activity aimed at democratic institutions and parliamentarians. The government believes that the recent revelations of such activities indicate a broader pattern of unacceptable behaviour by state-affiliated actors from China against the UK. In a recent assessment, the National Cyber Security Centre directly attributed two cyber-attack instances over 2021-2022 to China. In response to this increasing threat, NCSC has published updated guidance in its Defending Democracy collection for political organisations (e.g., political parties, think tanks, and electoral bodies, with advice on reducing the likelihood of cyber-attacks.
