The Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology has approved new research on digital disengagement and reluctance. The report will focus on the significance of digital technology in accessing public services and participating in society. It will highlight the issue of digital reluctance, which affects around 7.8 million adults in the UK who have never used the internet due to a lack of interest, perceived complexity, and privacy concerns. The report will emphasise how digital reluctance can exacerbate existing inequalities and limit individuals from fully engaging in modern societal activities. The work is expected to begin in April 2024, and the report will be published in July. Stakeholder contributions will be accepted until May 17th 2024; guidance for contributors is available online. The POSTnote will particularly address issues related to digitally reluctant groups and consider their policy implications.
