On July 6th, 2021, James Heath, the CEO of the National Infrastructure Commission, delivered a speech at the 18th Annual UK Sustainable Infrastructure Summit in London. In his speech, he outlined the Commission’s approach and principles for the second National Infrastructure Assessment (NIA), which is due for publication in October. The NIA will make it clear that infrastructure policy needs to be guided by a set of core principles:

  • Government should do fewer things, but do those things faster and bigger.
  • Government should deliver broader and deeper devolution, based on the belief that decisions taken locally better meet people’s needs.
  • Government should aim for policy stability to reduce uncertainty and costs.
