The UK National Audit Office has recently published a 27-page good practice guide titled “Overcoming Challenges to Managing Risks in Government.” The guide is aimed at senior leaders, risk practitioners in government, and members of audit and risk assurance committees in the public sector. It outlines ten valuable approaches to managing risk, including leadership and risk culture, capability and expertise, and risk appetite and tolerance. The guide is accompanied by an assessment checklist that follows the ten approaches, including statements that can help assess organisation’s risk performance. The aim is to encourage meaningful team discussions and actions to improve risk management practices.
