The centre-right think tank Onward has unveiled its proposal for a modern version of National Service. It calls on the Government to form a new Great British National Service for every 16-year-old, remodelled from the existing National Citizen Service with an opt-out mechanism.

A Statement by Penny Mordaunt MP applauds the work of the think tank and the proposal but enforces the position that the state’s role should be restricted to convener and enabler to ensure scope for enterprise, social and commercial opportunities, emphasising the need for such a scheme to be grounded in a whole-of-society approach in line with the Government’s strategic vision for National Resilience.
