Climate change drives disaster risk by altering the frequency and intensity of hazards and affecting exposure and vulnerability to hazards. Climate risk assessment and adaptation are critical for protecting society and the economy, and the European Commission has published new guidance on how to conduct a climate change risk assessment. The Implementation Platform of the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change (MIP4Adapt) has developed a step-by-step guide designed to support regional and local climate adaptation plans or strategies. The guide outlines six actions for the assessment, which are 1) identifying sensitivities and adaptive capacities, 2) rating vulnerabilities, 3) selecting future scenarios, 4) rating exposure and impacts, 5) rating risks and opportunities, and 6) communicating uncertainties.
