Open-access research published in the International Journal of Disaster Risk Science examines how Practitioners can support citizen volunteers in disaster risk reduction by examining the ‘Good and Ready’ initiative in New Zealand.

Good and Ready is a New Zealand Red Cross programme implemented in Auckland, Aotearoa, New Zealand. The initiative encourages volunteer participation and aims to empower local communities to enhance their resilience against disasters. The program underscores the significance of volunteers in guiding and organising community-based efforts to reduce disaster risks.

The study identified challenges in accommodating local needs and following a standardised approach. It also emphasised the importance of providing volunteers with technical and soft skills training. Aligning the program with volunteers’ motivations and expectations is essential to ensure the programme’s sustainability. Furthermore, building stronger partnerships with local emergency agencies can enrich the programme. This research underscores the value of community-led programmes that are adjustable, well-supported through training, and integrated with local emergency services to prepare for disasters more effectively.
