‘Speaking In’ is a new initiative founded by Laurin Mooney based on modern safety science and complexity theory. This article explores ‘Speaking In’, highlighting the multiple foundational flaws and ineffectiveness of the current ‘speaking up’ culture. The article presents Speaking IN® as a solution for creating a safe and engaging work environment. The approach emphasises the importance of understanding power dynamics, human nature, and the needs of complex socio-technical systems to foster a culture where everyone feels safe to share their insights. The article discusses the role of language and organisational justice in shaping a fair and inclusive work environment, suggesting that Speaking IN® can lead to more equitable and effective communication. The method aims to create psychological safety, engagement, and inclusion by addressing the emotional conditions necessary for diverse perspectives to thrive.
