The London School of Economic and Political Science recently published research in the Journal for Environmental Science and Policy which assessed the Adverse Weather and Health Plan (AWHP) launched in 2023, as the UK’s current policy guidance for addressing heatwaves in the UK. The research involved semi-structured interviews with stakeholders and aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the new plan in addressing heat risk. The study found that the AWHP is well-received and considered to have functional institutional arrangements and strategies that manage immediate heat risks. However, the research also highlighted areas for improvement, including the need for better public communication, a broader understanding of heat impacts beyond health, and leadership, institutional structure, roles, responsibilities, and funding for addressing long-term heat risk and preparedness in the UK.
