A group of scientists funded by the European Space Agency has developed a Digital Twin Earth Hydrology Platform. This platform creates a virtual replica of the Earth’s water cycle by combining high-resolution satellite observations and cutting-edge modelling. The tool can be used to build a test environment for our planet. As the climate crisis persists and human impacts on the water cycle continue to increase, the platform’s complex and detailed modelling can help manage water resources and mitigate water-related hazards and extreme events. The simulation tool can be used by anyone, demonstrating its potential to be a valuable technology for everyone. The research underpinning the project has been published in the Journal of Frontiers in Science, and further project advances are being considered to overcome current limitations, challenges, and uncertainty.
