The Alan Turing Institute and the Met Office have teamed up for a new collaboration to develop AI models to improve weather forecasting, including extreme weather events, to save lives and protect critical national infrastructure. The collaboration will combine machine learning techniques with existing weather forecasting methods to help predict exceptional rainfall, impactful thunderstorms, and extreme heat waves more accurately. The project will also provide specialised forecasts for business and industry decision-makers. The Met Office Chief AI Officer, Professor Kirstine Dale, believes that using AI for weather forecasting is a natural progression of this technology, with the potential to benefit societies worldwide.
