New research has been published in Nature warning about the risk of a collapse of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), which is a major component of the Earth’s climate system. The research finds that AMOC has been weakening and showing early-warning signals of collapse. estimating that the AMOC will collapse around mid-century under the current IPCC scenario of greenhouse gas emissions, with a 95% confidence interval of 2025-2095. The research calls for urgent actions to reduce emissions and avoid the severe impacts of an AMOC shutdown on the climate.
