Open-access research published in One Earth combines the analysis of climate actions reported under the Global Covenant of Mayors with insights from 362 cities interested in the European 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission. The authors argue for better inclusion of strategies to combat urban heat in local action plans, focusing on prevention, awareness, local differences, diversity, and social justice. The study examines local action plans for addressing urban overheating, analysing types of actions, risks, sectors, vulnerable groups, costs, timelines, and the influence of city size, country, climate, heat/cold waves, and GDP. While most actions emphasise green solutions, there is also a need to consider diversity and social justice.
